What A Pinched Nerve Feels Like, And What Causes It

adminadmin2 min read

A pinched nerve occurs when surrounding tissue — a disc, bone, or muscle — puts pressure on a nerve, producing pain, numbness, or tingling that can radiate away from the spine. Here’s what commonly causes it, the signs worth watching for, and how we approach it at Kent Kangley Chiropractic.

Common Causes Of A Pinched Nerve

A pinched nerve can come from a few different sources:

  • A disc bulge or herniation pressing on a nearby nerve root — one of the most common sources of pinched-nerve symptoms.
  • Bone spurs and joint narrowing, where joint changes over time can narrow the space around a nerve and increase pressure on it.
  • Repetitive motion and posture, where sustained or repeated positions can compress a nerve over time.

Signs Of A Pinched Nerve To Watch For

A few patterns are worth having examined:

  • Sharp or radiating pain.
  • Numbness or tingling.
  • Muscle weakness.
  • Symptoms that worsen with certain positions.

Numbness Or Weakness Warrants Prompt Evaluation

Pinched-nerve pain that’s purely uncomfortable often responds to a structured care plan, but numbness, tingling, or weakness that’s spreading or persistent is a sign the compression deserves a closer look sooner rather than later. A pinched nerve often overlaps with conditions like sciatica or carpal tunnel syndrome, depending on where the compression occurs.

How We Approach A Pinched Nerve At Kent Kangley Chiropractic

We identify where along the nerve pathway the compression is likely originating. Imaging isn’t always necessary — we use it selectively when your exam findings call for it. From there, your plan — see our techniques page for the range of approaches we draw from — targets relieving pressure on the affected nerve and restoring normal movement.
